Insomnia and restlessness is a problem affecting a lot of people these days. The stress of the day has contributed to this condition.
Overeating or eating a heavy meal late, overthinking and anxiety have been found to cause insomnia as well, however it is possible for you to get a good night sleep by adopting a simple breathing technique.
What is this technique?
The 4-7-8 breathing technique
This breathing technique was founded by a Harvard graduate by name of Dr. Andrew Weil.
The technique involves deliberately regulating ones breathing to counts of 4 – 7 – 8 seconds.
By breathing in this manner your lungs will be filled with oxygen, your mind will be made calm and your muscles will be better relaxed thereby helping you to fall asleep in no time at all.
More information on the 4-7-8 breathing technique
Dr. Andrew Weil while researching into how stress can be controlled through breathing and meditation came up with the 4-7-8 breathing technique.
The technique works by you breathing in air through your nostrils for four seconds and then you hold this air in your lungs for seven seconds afterwards using your mouth – exhale for eight seconds. By following this seemingly simple breathing technique your brain will send out certain chemicals that will calm you while your heart rate is significantly lowered.
If you try this breathing technique you will soon be falling asleep. You can also try this technique when you are stressed as the body’s adrenal glands will release adrenaline when you are under pressure; this adrenaline raises the heart rate. The 4-7-8 breathing technique will lower your heart rate and your brain and body become relaxed and comfortable.
This technique is effective and useful for executive who spend long hours every day at work, it will get them relaxed in no tie and relieve them of their stress and anxiety.
